Vision, Mission & Goals

Vision
The Research & Education Foundation is dedicated to the improvement of health
and healthcare delivery by promoting the development of a culture of research
and education at Sligo General Hospital and in its region. The Foundation
considers the improvement of patient care to be at the core of its activities.
Mission
The Research & Education Foundation is working to increase healthcare research
and education activity in the Sligo region. To this end, we work both to develop
the capacity of staff to undertake research, support the funding of research,
develop research partnerships and raise awareness and understanding of
healthcare research as well as working to promote education on health and
healthcare matters
Goals
The Research & Education Foundation has identified five goals for achieving its
mission:
1. Increase the funding and capacity for research in association with Sligo
General Hospital
2. Support and develop the skills of staff and researchers involved in
healthcare research & education
3. Raise the profile of healthcare research undertaken in the Sligo Region
4. Provide a learning environment for topical health and healthcare matters
5. Maintain the Research & Education Foundation as a sustainable organisation
Actions:
In order to work towards the above goals the Research & Education Foundation
will undertake the following specific activities:
Goal 1 Increase the funding and capacity for research in association
with Sligo General Hospital
- Provide research seed grants for pilot and small scale projects with an
involvement with SGH
- Participate in the HRC/MRCG Research Grant Scheme offering grants to research
projects with an involvement with SGH
- Develop and maintain relevant policies and governance to enable research
activity to take place under the auspices of the Foundation
- Support and promote the development of research facilities at SGH
- Develop links with educational institutions, other hospitals and other
stakeholders to promote research activity
- Facilitate the strategic development of research at SGH by way of
participating in the development of hospital research governance and the setting
of strategic objectives for research
Goal 2 Support and develop the skills of staff and researchers
involved in healthcare research & education
- Develop a research skills programme for staff encompassing a wide range of
topics relevant to the planning and conduct of research activity
- Provide a research poster design and printing service
- Host an annual conference enabling staff to present research undertaken
locally
- Contribute to the governance of research at SGH by undertaking the secretariat
of the Research Ethics Committee
- Make information on other research service providers available to local
researchers
Goal 3 Raise the profile of healthcare research undertaken in the
Sligo Region
- Host an annual conference with the participation of high profile national
and international researchers and local researchers
- Facilitate the publication of local research activity in the local and
national press
- Publish a bi-annual Foundation newsletter
- Maintain an up-to-date website
Goal 4 Provide a learning environment for topical health and
healthcare matters
- Develop a public education programme with the participation of high
profile speakers or relevant experts
- Involve healthcare professionals at SGH with the public meeting activities
thereby facilitating communication between healthcare professionals and the
public
- Link with appropriate voluntary bodies and charities associated with the
relevant public education topics
- Support and organise educational events addressing topical healthcare issues
- Facilitate the local hosting of out-reach national training events
Goal 5 Maintain the Research & Education Foundation as a sustainable
organisation
- Raise funds in the form of personal contributions, grants and sponsorships to
enable the Foundation to carry out its work of research and education
- Undertake commissioned work on behalf of SGH
- Maintain membership of, and avail of the expertise of, relevant national
bodies such as the Medical Research Charities Group (MRCG) and The Wheel
- Comply with legislation for charities, companies and any other relevant bodies
- Maintain active Investment Fund Management
